Being Jewish In The D.R. — The Sosua Diaspora
In the summer of 2009 three filmmakers traveled from Montreal to the Dominican Republic to take a look at the dwindling Jewish communities on the island. With their ‘Hidden Faith‘ Project they created a interesting look at story of how Jewish Holocaust refugees ended up in the DR, the only country to take in Jewish refugees during World War II.
It features interview with many of the last Jewish remnants of an unusual diaspora, including Louis Hess, who was the first Holocaust refugee to arrive on the island, and the last to live here. He passed away in 2010 at the chipper age of 101.
For those curious about the history of the Jewish settlers and their experiences, as well as seeing what remains of the Jewish community on the island, enjoy this unique web series.
Produced, directed, shot and edited by David Adelman, Nicholas Timmins and Paul Shore.
